Ok, it wasn’t that big a deal. It was a rough morning. I chose to shower. And I refuse to feel bad about that. Because American women are unconsciously in a contest for who suffers the most. The only prize is the triumph we feel when we get appropriate sympathy for our suffering. And if you refuse to play- like when a group of mommies are gushing about how great their showers are on Saturdays and instead of enthusiastically agreeing, I ask “Why can’t you shower on weekdays?”- you will be met with mild scorn. You aren’t suffering and sacrificing enough, you must not love your baby enough. Enough to enter the suffering contest.
